How to create some personal time during a busy work trip
How to create some personal time during a busy work tripHow to create some personal time during a busy work tripA geschftsleben trip does not have to be all about business to be successful. Finding a little vacation time within an assigned work trip is achievable if you learn how to balance the needs of your employer with your goal of personal downtime. Heres how to do it rightBe smart with schedulingYou may not have the day off to be a tourist, but you can find time for sightseeing by scheduling your meetings smartly. Dont say yes to everything and dont agree to meetings with no clear ending time. Thats the advice career consultant Simma Lieberman has for business travel. Theres an unconscious feeling that you have to overachieve and always be available, Lieberman cautions. But science has found that a day of back-to-back client meetings with no breaks is not productive or satisfying in the long run. One study found that participants were successful when they took fun breaks before h ard activities Positive emotions at the outset make some work tasks easier to endure. Indeed, breaks and recovery from work benefit workers in many ways, from increasing job satisfaction to increasing productivity.Get creative with your scheduling. If you have the flexibility to choose your hotel or the location of your client meeting, choose it next to landmarks you actually want to visit. Try to be within walking distance of fun sights, shops, and restaurants. That way, you can get the pleasure of seeing a wonder of the world before you have to endure the stress of a high-pressure presentation.Extend your stayIf you can add on a day before you have to be back at the office, do it. If your employer already paid for you to be there, it will be cheaper for you to add personal days of fun. To make the most of your hotel stay, Kendra Thornton, Royal Travel Tours president, advises business travelers to ask hotels if they can apply the corporate discount to their personal days. Many hot els want to inculcate client loyalty from their corporate travelers and are amenable to giving you the discount, she said.Avoid room serviceTo fight off homesickness and the gloom of dreary hotel rooms, minimize the amount of time you will be staying holed up in your room. Once you unpack, find a place like a coffee shop or even your downstairs hotel lobby to work. Thats the advice business travelers gave for making a hotel feel like home.Bill McGowan, CEO of Clarity Media Group, recommended using your room only for sleeping and showering - find a spot away from the hotel room where you can immerse yourself in the culture. For some business travelers, a local meal may be the one chance to experience the culture of a town. Try using review services, word-of-mouth stories, and booking apps to find the right restaurant for you.Dont push it too far thoughPrioritize and remember that you are here for business, not play. Dont push your luck with using expenses for personal gain. Make sure to check your companys corporate travel policy before you expense the triple-digit cost of your meal.If you are legitimately traveling on business, a company knows what your business expenses are, travel expert Joe BrancatelliBrancatelli told CNN. So just keep your personal stuff on a personal card.

Here are nine signs that you might be an ambivert
Here are nine signs that you might be an ambivertHere are nine signs that you might be an ambivertIm sure youve been asked many times whether youre an introvert or an extrovert. For some people, its an easy choice, but for most of us, its difficult to choose one way or the other. Its hard to choose because the introvert/extrovert dichotomy reflects a tired and outdated view of personality. Personality traits exist along a continuum, and the vast majority of us arent introverts or extroverts - we fall somewhere in the middle.Personality consists of a stable tischset of preferences and tendencies through which we approach the world. Personality traits form at an early age and are fixed by early adulthood. Many important things about you change over the course of your lifetime, but your personality isnt one of them.Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. Bruce LeeThe continuum between introversi on and extroversion captures one of the most important personality traits. Its troubling that were encouraged to categorize ourselves one way or the other because there are critical strengths and weaknesses commonly associated with each type.Adam Grant at Wharton set out to study this phenomenon, and his findings are fascinating. First, he found that two-thirds of people dont strongly identify as introverts or extroverts. These people (aka, the vast majority of us) are called ambiverts, who have both introverted and extroverted tendencies. The direction ambiverts lean toward varies greatly, depending on the situation.Think of introversion and extroversion as a spectrum, with ambiversion lying somewhere in the middleAmbiverts have a distinct advantage over true introverts and extroverts. Because their personality doesnt lean too heavily in either direction, they have a much easier time adjusting their approach to people based on the situation. This enables them to connect mora easily , and more deeply, with a wider variety of people.Grants research also disproved the powerful and widely held notion that the best-performing salespeople are extroverts. He found that ambiverts greater social flexibility enabled them to outsell all other groups, moving 51 percent more product per hour than the average salesperson. Notice how sales increased as extroversion increased, peaking with those who were just moderately extroverted.Grant explained the finding this wayBecause they naturally engage in a flexible pattern of talking and listening, ambiverts are likely to express sufficient assertiveness and enthusiasm to persuade and close a sale, but are more inclined to listen to customers interests and less vulnerable to appearing too excited or overconfident. How ambiversion works in the brainHow social you are is largely driven by dopamine, the brains feel-good hormone. We all have different levels of dopamine-fueled stimulation in the neocortex (the area of the brain that is responsible for higher mental functions such as language and conscious thought). Those who naturally have high levels of stimulation tend to be introverts - they try and avoid any extra social stimulation that might make them feel anxious or overwhelmed. Those with low levels of stimulation tend to be extroverts. Under-stimulation leaves extroverts feeling bored, so they seek social stimulation to feel good. Most peoples levels of natural stimulation dont reach great extremes, though it does fluctuate. Sometimes you may feel the need to seek out stimulation, while other times, you may avoid it.Finding out whether youre an ambivertIts important to pin down where you fall in the introversion/extroversion scale. By increasing your awareness of your type, you can develop a better sense of your tendencies and play to your strengths. If you think that you might be an ambivert, but arent certain, see how many of the following statements apply to you. If most of them apply, youre most likel y an ambivert.I can perform tasks alone or in a group. I dont have much preference either way.Social settings dont make me uncomfortable, but I tire of being around people too much.Being the center of attention is fun for me, but I dont like it to last. Some people think Im quiet, while others think Im highly social.I dont always need to be moving, but too much downtime leaves me feeling bored.I can get lost in my own thoughts just as easily as I can lose myself in a conversation.Small talk doesnt make me uncomfortable, but it does get boring. When it comes to trusting other people, sometimes Im skeptical, and other times, I dive right in.If I spend too much time alone, I get bored, yet too much time around other people leaves me feeling drained. The trick to being an ambivert is knowing when to force yourself to lean toward one side of the spectrum when it isnt happening naturally. Ambiverts with low self-awareness struggle with this. For example, at a networking event, a self-aware a mbivert will lean toward the extroverted side of the scale, even when it has been a long day and he or she has had enough of people. Mismatching your approach to the situation can be frustrating, ineffective, and demoralizing for ambiverts.Bringing it all togetherTalentSmart has conducted research with over a million people and found that those in the upper echelon of performance at work also tend to be highly self-aware (90 percent of them, in fact). By gaining a better sense of where you fall on the introversion/extroversion scale, you can build insight into your tendencies and preferences, which increases your self-awareness and emotional intelligence. This will help you improve your performance. This article first appeared on LinkedIn.

5 Bits of Bad Job Search Advice
5 Bits of Bad Job Search Advice5 Bits of Bad Job Search Advice5 Bits of Bad Job Search AdviceWeve probably all been recipients of bad advice at one time or another, on everything from what to buy, whom to date, how to conduct a job search, and the best way to write your resume. The intentions, Im sure, were good. But later maybe much later, especially with dating you learn the hard way that you may not have received the best possible counsel. When it comes to the job search, theres no shortage of advice, and much of it is well, not good. Heres a list of five pieces of bad advice, the bad reasoning behind them, and my own advice on what you should do insteadBad Advice 1. Dont bother looking for a job around the holidays.Reasoning Hiring managers are too busy to look at your resume. Theyre preoccupied with year-end activities, reaching annual and quarterly quotas, writing performance reviews, and planning their own holidays. My Advice If they need someone to fill critical roles, especi ally if a quota is on the line, they just might hire someone like you and quickly Or, if they need someone to fill a new position that takes effect in January, its a stahlkammer bet theyll be interviewing in November and December. Besides, if other job landseekers heed this bad advice, there will be less competition for you.Bad Advice 2. The earlier you arrive for your interview, the better.Reasoning Arriving early demonstrates your punctuality, your enthusiasm for the job and company, and creates a good impression with the hiring manager. My Advice Arriving 10 minutes early isnt a bad thing, but arriving too early sends at least one of the following messages You cant follow directions, you think appointment times are approximate, or youre desperate. You wont get interviewed until the scheduled time, and youll make people nervous by hanging out in the reception area. So if the interview is scheduled for 2 p.m., dont arrive earlier than 145.Bad Advice 3. Never take notes in an interv iew.Reasoning You must maintain constant eye contact with the hiring manager. Taking notes is a distraction. My Advice The typical interview lasts at least 45 minutes (or if all goes well, a lot longer), so youre probably not going to remember everything you discussed, especially if you ask questions (and you should). Hiring managers expect you to take notes, and doing so will send a clear message that youre serious about and interested in the job or company. It also gives you fodder for your post-interview thank you note, which you can use to reference a specific point you discussed. But if youre still uncomfortable about it, just ask at the start of the interview, Would you mind if I take notes?Bad Advice 4. You must say only positive things about ex-employers.Reasoning Saying anything remotely bad or negative sends the message that youre a complainer, or someone with an ax to grind. My Advice Interviewers understand that not every professional parting is based on a pleasant mutual decision. You can address something negative, as long as how you say it doesnt come across as bad. For instance, you might indeed have had an unreasonable boss, but if you say, My bosss ego was bigger than the State of Montana, it makes you look unprofessional. The best way to handle this? Use factual, non-emotional statements, such as My boss and I had different working styles, which caused a conflict, or The company changed the way it does business, and it limited my opportunities for professional development. The hiring manager might assume you harbor anger after all, just about all of us have had a job or boss that left us with bad memories but by sticking to the facts, youre sending the message that youve moved on.Bad Advice 5. Older workers need Botox or plastic surgery to get hired.Reasoning Although its illegal for a company to come right out and ask how old you are, they can see your wrinkles and gray hair. Ageism exists in the workplace, so making your appearance more yo uthful can make a strong impression. My Advice Donald Trump recently wrote a blog post on this subject (Laid Off? Try Cosmetic Surgery) and my initial reaction was, Donald Youre Fired But to his credit, The Donald debunked that advice a new nose or less wrinkly eyes arent going to get you a good job. Its all about your track record and what you can do. Not how you look. Id suggest working on your resume, not your face. So, skip the Botox injections and elective surgery, but make sure your clothes, shoes, hairstyle, and eyeglasses have been updated more recently than Y2K.What other bad job search advice have you heard? How to deal with workplace bullying
How to deal with workplace bullying How to deal with workplace bullyingPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun When you think of bullies, you may think of the beefy kid at school pushing and shoving the runt of the class. But bullies are no longer consigned to the school playground. They can be found in the workplace lurking around office cubicles, behind counters and desks or loitering around the water cooler and more than yur lunch money could be at stake. Workplace bullying is notlage always overt it can be subtle but insidious. It is a serious issue that not only causes a risk to the health and safety of the victim, but can also affect the whole business. And occasionally, as in the tragic case of 19-year-old Brodie Panlock who committed suicide as a response to workplace bullying, the consequences can be dire. Bullying is more common than many people realise, with WorkSafes annual research consistently showing that 14 per cent of Victorian workers had experienced bullying. No bu llies in our house While you may be extremely lucky to have a relaxed workplace, remember that not everyone shares the same sense of humour. People have different sensitivities and sometimes what is intended as playful joking can come across like a partieal attack. Employees can be reluctant to tell employers how they feel for fear of causing trouble or losing their job. As an employer you may be unaware that bullying is taking place in your office, but it is your duty to provide a working environment that is safe and without risks to the health of your workers. It is also the responsibility of co-workers to speak up if they witness bullying in the workplace. Workers have a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety, as well as the health and safety of others in the workplace. They also have a duty to cooperate with actions their employer takes to comply with OHS laws. What is bullying? Bullying can come in many forms but can generally be defined as repeated unrea sonable behaviour directed towards a worker or a group of workers that creates a risk to health and safety. Whether intended or not, bullying is an OHS hazard. Bullying behaviour can be direct and can run the gamut from verbal abuse and putting someone down to spreading rumours or innuendo about someone, or interfering with someones personal property or work equipment. It can also be indirect and includes behaviours such as unjustified criticism or complaints, deliberately excluding someone from workplace activities, deliberately denying access to information or other resources, withholding information that is vital for effective work performance, setting tasks that are unreasonably above or below a workers ability, deliberately changing work arrangements, such as rosters and leave, to inconvenience a particular worker or workers, setting timelines that are very difficult to achieve, and excessive scrutiny at work. Bullying does not, however, include things like constructive fe edback, downsizing or deciding not to select a worker for promotion. The effects of bullying Bullying has profound effects on both individuals and organisations, leading to loss of productivity, high staff turnover, increased absenteeism, drops in employee performance, low morale and possible legal costs. unterstellung are not things that businesses can afford to ignore, either from a professional or ethical standpoint. Bullied individuals can be physically or psychologically damaged and are more likely to make mistakes that lead to injuries. They can also experience increased muscular tension and are more likely to develop occupational overuse syndromes and low back pain. Workplace policy Workplaces need to develop and implement a policy on bullying prevention that sets out standards of behaviour and clearly identifies inappropriate behaviour that will not be tolerated. Procedures should outline how reports of bullying will be dealt with and ensure that the process is objective , fair and transparent, as well as confidential. The employers response should be guided by the following principles Treat all matters seriously Act promptly Dont victimise anyone who raises an issue of bullying Once a complaint has been made, all involved parties should be advised of available support and treated with sensitivity, respect and courtesy Act with impartiality towards all parties, avoiding any personal or professional bias Communicate with all parties about the process (how long it will take and what will happen), providing clear reasons for any actions taken Consult with health and safety representatives Treat all complaints with confidentiality, revealing details only to those directly involved Document the process, recording all meetings and interviews with details of who was present and agreed outcomes How to deal with workplace bullying Sometimes a clear and polite request to stop the behaviour, which can be made by the person affected, their supervisor or manag er, or another appropriate person, is all that is required to stop the bullying behaviour. The supervisor or manager should document the request and its outcome. In other cases, when the direct approach does not resolve the issue, mediation or discussion with a third party may be required. A neutral and independent person can assist resolution through discussion of the issues when all concerned parties agree to this approach. When a serious allegation has been made, a formal investigation should be conducted to determine if the report of bullying is valid. At the end of an investigation, recommendations should be made about the measures that should be undertaken to resolve the matter, with the outcome communicated to the involved parties in a fair and unbiased way. Strategies for resolution There are a number of strategies that managers and employers can implement to put an end to bullying behaviour in the workplace Gain a commitment from the perpetrator to cease the behaviour ( direct approach) Move the perpetrator away from the affected person Require an apology Implement disciplinary action Mediation (where both parties agree to mediation and to the mediator) Provide coaching, counselling support and/or mentoring to the affected person Provide a structured program to reintegrate the person into the workplace Review workplace policy with all workers and managers Run an awareness update Provide workgroup and organisation-wide training ResourcesMy first resumeCover letter for my first jobCareer Insider StoriesShelley Lask - Body Positive Health & FitnessInterested in becoming a?Human Resources OfficerGeneral ManagerBusiness ManagerAccountantOffice Administrator CoursesBachelor of Social WorkEnquire Online Enquire OnlineCertificate III in Health AdministrationEnquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Criminal JusticeEnquire Online Enquire OnlineCertificate III in Allied Health AssistanceEnquire Online Enquire OnlineJosie ChunRelated ArticlesBrowse moreCareer progressionHow to advance your careerDo you feel like youve hit a bit of a wall in your career and want to advance but dont know how?
